December 10,2020 The NCOM ocean model file names are changing and the current files will no longer be available on December 18. The new files will be available starting December 11 in parallel with the old files for 1 week here on our ftp site. For more details on the new file names see the README.txt file. April 21,2017 The NCOM files have had delivery problems over the last 2 weeks. The Navy and NOAA have been working on a fix and hope to implement it the week of April 24. April 23, 2015 There have been missed and late NCOM files the last 3 days. The Navy and NOAA are troubleshooting the delivery problem. April 9, 2015 New NCOM Alaska region files are being served here. They just became operational and more details are in the READ_ME_regional.txt file. January 2, 2015 The NCOM and Navy HYCOM models did not run today. They will posted as soon as the models are rerun. June 3, 2014 The NCOM regional files have had delivery problems the last few days. We are missing the Amseas files for 5/31 and 6/02. We will post these as soon as we receive them. February 6, 2014 The NCOM regional files have had delivery problems the last few days. The Navy is working on the problem and we will recover files as soon as we can. October 2, 2013 The October 1 NCOM regional files were not delivered and will be made up on October 3. June 7, 2013 The NCOM regional files were delivered with not all of the later forecasts on June 6 and June 7. Navo is investigating. April 17, 2013 The NCOM regional files were not delivered from Navo on April 17. A server is down and is being repaired. April 9, 2013 NCOM Regional files are not available via the NCEP Nomads Open DAP server until late in the week of April 15 -19 when the settings for the new grid sizes can be implemented. In the mean time please use the Ocean Nomads server from NCDDC that is being updated daily: http://www.ncddc.noaa.gov/ocean-nomads/global-ncom/ April 8, 2013 The grid sizes of the NCOM regional files were changed on April 5 by the Navy for their better use along with the new HYCOM model. The resolution was decreased slightly from 3 km to about 3.6 km but the grid regions are very close to the old files. The new grid sizes and grid limits are below. U.S. East (ncom_relo_useast_*.nc) old size (Lat x Lon) = 814 x 571 new size = 664 x 544 old grid limits: 20 N to 41.95 deg N and -82 W to -64.05 deg W new grid limits: 20 N to 42.09 deg N and -82 W to -63.90 deg W West Coast (ncom_relo_socal*.nc) old size (Lat x Lon) = 556 x 436 new size = 454 x 424 old grid limits: 25 N to 39.985 deg N and -125 W to -111.07 deg W new grid limits: 25N to 40.098 deg N and -125 W to -110.90 deg W Hawaii old size (Lat x Lon) = 523 x 484 new size = 424 x 424 old grid limits: 15 N to 29.094 deg N and -166 W to -151.927 deg W new grid limits: 15 N to 29.098 deg N and -166 W to -151.90 deg W American Seas old size (Lat x Lon) = 1000 x 1510 new size = 814 x 1294 old grid limits: 5 N to 31.973 deg N and -98 W to -55.037 W new grid limits: 5 N to 32.097 deg N and -98 W to -54.904 deg W December 19, 2012 There are delivery problems now with NCOM files. Some NCOM files were not received today due to problems with the delivery pipeline and NOAA is investigating. December 14, 2012 NCOM files were not received yesterday, December 13 due to some upgrades in the delivery pipeline. The pipeline should be restored today. June 21, 2012 We did not receive Global NCOM files from the Navy on 6/20. There have been delivery problems for all of the Ncom files over the last few days. We will make up missed files as soon as we have them. January 26, 2012 No NCOM files will be available today. Tomorrow's files should be available - we will update status when its known. December 14, 2011 In case of data outages for NCOM there are Global RTOFS files available based on the HYCOM 1/2 deg Navy Model via ftp: ftp://ftp.mpc.ncep.noaa.gov/grids/operational/GLOBALHYCOM/ The Global RTOFS model is the Navy HYCOM model with wind forcing from the GFS model. Global RTOFS is run at NOAA/NCEP by the Marine Modeling Analysis Branch (MMAB) and became operational on Tuesday, October 25. November 18, 2011 Some of the NCOM global files will likely be unavailable this weekend. We will make-up missed files on Monday,November 21. November 4, 2011 Some of the NCOM global files will likely be unavailable this weekend. We will make-up missed files on Monday,November 7. October 25,2011 The NCOM global files have been unavailable from Navo since 10/21/2011. We will provide these files and recover the missing files as soon as they are available. October 7, 2011 Several of the NCOM files did not come in on 10/05. We will be recovering these files next week. September 1, 2011 The Fukushima files have had a processing error since 8/25 and may not be available until the end of the week. The files will be replaced in the next few days when the processing is caught up. The American Seas File Names have changed effective August 18, 2011. The new names have an added '_u_': ncom_relo_amseas_u_YYYYMMDD00_*.tar.gz, and the individual files within the .tar files also: ncom_relo_amseas_u_YYYYMMDD00_t**.nc The Japan NCOM Sendai files are no longer being generated effective July 23, 2011. May 2, 2011 **Note: The global surface currents found in ncom_glb_sfc_YYYYMMDD00.nc.gz and ncom_glb_sfcurrents_YYYYMMDD00.nc.gz should be treated with caution in areas near coast lines. Surface currents very close to the coast lines may be spurious due to coarse global model resolution and shallow waters. The model developers have recommended that users should not use surface currents within about 25 km from the coast (2 grid points in longitude at the equator or 6 grid points at 70° N).
